It was over 30 years ago when I found myself reading books like A.W. Tozer’s Knowledge of the Holy and A.W. Pink’s Knowing God. These two books created such a painful longing inside of me to know God. Who is He? What’s He like? How do I find Him? How do I understand the incomprehensible? These phrases pained me to the core as I sought everywhere to find Him.

The initial answer to this cry came at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp in Colorado in 1975. I woke up the first morning there and took with me a young man who I was discipling. I began to lead him through my daily readings through Proverbs. That particular day’s reading was from Proverbs 2.

As, I began to read through Proverbs 2:1-5, it was like a light went off inside of me as I read, “Then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Immediately, I began to weep and say, “This is how you find Him.”

I went away and wept for a while undone by the simplicity of the roadmap laid out in finding God. I look back on that one morning 30 years ago and see how that has led to a life given to finding the knowledge of God and understanding the fear of the Lord. The Beauty of God is the great cure for the church in this hour. It’s truly time to hear of the splendor and majesty of Jesus. Identifying the True Problem of the Contemporary Church

To truly know God surpasses words and takes us into the very life of God Himself, transforming us and causing us to live like people from another age.

But where is the awe, the wonder, the silence that our Father’s knew in the face of God? Today, we falsely rely on many words, and many phrases, but the greatness and wonder of God does not translate into transformed lives.

What is the true problem of the nations and the church among the nations? The way that we answer this question means everything. Do we need one more idea, one more technique, one more new way to reach the lost, one more new way to do anything?

The statistics that once separated the church and the world are not as easy to separate seeing that the same realities that are crippling the world are crippling our churches. The divorce rates in the church equal that of the world, pornographic addictions in the church compare to those out of the church, burn-out in the ministry, pastors and leaders leaving churches due to immorality, scandal, or boredom, and we are in a head-on collision with the greatest hour of human history.

Every one of these problems are the result of a bigger problem and it’s our problem with God. I can’t help but quote A.W. Tozer’s here:“10,000 lesser problems are solved when we come to a right understanding of God.”

The greatest problem for the church in America (where I am from) is not a sin, is the subject of God, who He is, what’s He like, who are we to Him and our mandate to know Him intimately.

We have set up a system that lives on showing up to church one day a week, to throw our money into a bucket and see what the, “man or woman of God” has heard for the week. We would rather do this than deal individually and corporately over what we truly believe about God. We are living in days similar to those of Hosea when He cried out, “There is no truth, or mercy or knowledge of God in the land.” (Hosea 4:1). There is no true living, breathing knowledge of God, and it’s time for someone to sound an alarm to return to it.

Why I Created this 12 Day Intensive (Video Discipleship Program)

In an hour in the church where we are running around looking for the newest expression of evangelism, the newest expression of cell groups, the newest this and newest that, God is calling out to a generation to, “lift up your eyes and see who has created these things.”

It’s time for us to go higher, to come up higher, to lift our gaze higher, to lift our perspective higher, and touch God for real. We must unlearn everything that we think we know about the Father, about the Son, and about the Spirit and ask for fresh revelation that brings us into reality.
